Southridge instrumental and Dance Ensembles

Concert Band

The Concert Band is composed of freshman musicians (woodwinds and brass) new to the high school experience and constitutes the first step in the student's band tenure.

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is mainly a sophomore- junior level (woodwinds and brass) ensemble that explores and learns more advanced concepts and literature. All concert band students progress to this ensemble their sophomore year.

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble is the most advanced ensemble (woodwinds and brass) at Southridge High School. The Wind Ensemble performs the most advanced wind band literature and performs at various contests and festivals throughout the winter and spring. Wind Ensemble positions are auditioned in the spring of each year.

Marching Band

The marching band program is among the best programs offered at Southridge High School. All students from Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble, as well as the Color Guard perform in the marching band during the fall and one parade every other spring. The Southridge Marching Band is a contemporary program that features the best designers, composers, arrangers, technicians and artists in our field.

Jazz Ensemble I

Jazz Ensemble I is composed of a select group of advanced students that perform a wide variety of jazz literature. The jazz style and improvisational techniques are explored, developed and refined. The Jazz Ensemble performs at regional festivals and competitions in the winter and spring. In addition to performing timeless standards, the jazz ensemble is always experimenting with newly composed jazz material from internationally known artists.

Jazz Ensemble II

A second Jazz Ensemble has been added at Southridge. Students in Jazz Ensemble II also perform a wide variety of jazz literature. Jazz style and improvisational techniques are explored, developed and refined. In addition to performing timeless standards, Jazz Ensemble II is also experimenting with newly composed jazz material from internationally known artists.

Basketball Band

The Basketball Band is an extra-curricular ensemble that performs at ten home basketball games through the season while traveling to post-season venues such as Mc Arthur Court in Eugene and the Chiles Center in Portland. A rich mix of modern and classic rock, jazz, funk, and hip-hop are played throughout the game.

The Southridge Basketball Band is divided into two bands to cover the playing assignments. They are the Red Band and Gold Band.

Percussion Ensemble

All percussionists enroll in this class. This course focuses on reinforcing quality percussion technique and musicianship in varying styles of music throughout the school year. A comprehensive percussion curriculum has been put in place to offer all percussion students individual development and improvement. Students in this class perform with the concert band, symphonic band, and wind ensemble at local festivals as well as concerts at Southridge High School.

Winter Percussion

Winter Percussion is an extra-curricular program that meets from December to late April and is open to all students pending an audition. Winter percussion brings the music and motion of marching band indoors. In addition to weekly rehearsals outside of the school day, this group travels to compete in four to five local and regional contests.

Associated with this program is a no-cut youth percussion team for students, grades 6-8 in the Southridge attendance area. This team will perform in three to four local contests each year.

Musical Pit Orchestra

The Pit Orchestra is an extra-curricular ensemble open to all students pending an audition. It provides the music for the Drama Department's musical productions.

String Orchestra

The Southridge String Orchestra is composed of string musicians that explore and perform a wide variety of quality string orchestra literature. This class meets for two trimesters and is open to all levels of string students. The String Orchestra performs at local concerts and regional festivals and competitions.

Dance & Guard Ensembles

The Dance and Guard ensembles is an extra-curricular program that provides the marching band with Flag, Rifle, and Saber lines in the fall and spring seasons. In addition they compete on their own during the Winter Guard season, traveling to several local, regional and national competitions.

We are an Education based team experience teaching dance/movement skills, Performance skills, Equipment skills, and the appreciation of Dance and Pageantry Arts as an art form. We believe strongly that ALL Dancers, no matter what their ability level, can grow and become better. No prior experience is required, simply the desire to learn, the willingness to work hard and the flexibility and rhythm to develop into a dancer with instruction.

Associated with the Winter Guard is a no-cut youth program open to all students, grades 5-8, in the Southridge attendance area. These teams will perform in three to four local contents each year.
